Josh's Review: Gold and Silver Version
Josh here! This section is going to be dedicated on Gold and Silver Version. These games were released in America October 15th, 2000, about a year after Yellow Version was released.
Many features came along with the release of these games:
- A real time difference, influencing when different Pokemon and people appeared.
- Breeding, allowing you to obtain baby Pokemon and perfect move-sets.
- A male or female main character.
- The Pokegear, including a map, the time, a phone, and a radio card you can receive later in the game.
- Dark and Steel Type Pokemon.
- Shiny Pokemon (due to the addition of more colors) and the PokeRUS virus.
- Different types of Pokeballs, like the Fast Ball.
- The ability to collect 16 badges; the badges of the local region (Johto) and the badges of the original region (Kanto.)
- Berries, with healing abilities.
- The ability to have your Pokemon hold items.
- Pokemon happiness, allowing certain Pokemon to evolve, like Chansey and Togepi.
The starters for this game include Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile. You get to name your rival, like in the original games, but this time, he becomes your rival by stealing one of the starters not chosen. The game is played on a Gameboy Color console. You can obtain all but 1 Pokemon on these games if you trade with other people with Gold, Silver, Crystal, Red, Blue, and Yellow. The only unobtainable Pokemon is Celebi. You can get this Pokemon though through an Action Replay or Game Shark, but I wouldn't recommend it. The only other way to get this Pokemon without cheating is to have the Japanese version of the game (in which Celebi is included on) or to go to a Nintendo event and get it downloaded.
Over all, I'd give these games a 4 star rating, even compared to nowadays' games. These ones have many interesting, cool, and useful features that were taken out for a generation or so in the later games, so Gold and Silver still keep their good name in comparison to Diamond/Pearl and etcetera.
